Term: American Bankers Association [ABA]

« Back to Glossary Index

The ABA has very little to do directly with credit cards. The ABA is however the registrar and allocator for Issuer Identification Numbers. In other words, the ABA tells credit card issuing banks and financial institutions what range of six digit numbers they can use to start the numbers of their credit card account numbers and also keeps anyone else from also using those same numbers.
