Term: Authorization

« Back to Glossary Index

An authorization is the merchant’s request to the cardholder’s issuing bank to make a transaction of a specific amount. An approval code or declined code is returned to the merchant. The approval verifies the availability of credit or funds in the cardholder’s account at that time. The issuing bank can designate a third party or even the credit card association to handle authorizations for them under certain circumstances.
