The PCI DSS is a best practices set of policies and standards to maximize data security for credit card, cash and debit card transactions and to protect cardholders from unauthorized use of their data. The standard was created and is managed by PCI. The PCI DSS standards apply to everyone involved in the credit and debit card industry. Failure to comply with the PCI DSS could result in additional fees and increased liability for the merchant or processor.
