The Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council is an international forum established in 2006 by five founding global payment brands (American Express, Discover, JCB International, MasterCard and Visa) to establish best practices standards to insure the security of cardholder data. The organization is most commonly referred to as PCI. There is no government involvement in PCI.

PCI is responsible for the development and management of the PCI DSS. PCI is also taking the lead for educating the industry and increasing the awareness of the standards among everyone even remotely involved in the handling of cardholder data.
