Term: Personal Identification Number [PIN]

« Back to Glossary Index

A PIN is a numeric code word used to verify transactions made with a debit card. A PIN may also be used to verify a transaction made with an EMV Chip card like those currently in use in Europe and Canada (Chip and PIN). While some U.S. issuers are issuing Chip and PIN cards the U.S. industry as a whole is not technologically equipped to use them.
